For those of you who aren’t yet familiar with The Straw Patch Project, they are a mental health project that uses nature based activities to improve mental, social and physical well-being. The project is run and managed by Sarah Pedlar and Alex Straw and is based just outside Ilfracombe, North Devon, at a small holding and campsite called Strawfields.

Recovery Devon’s 2021 Development Fund, was able to help The Straw Patch Project to set up and support a group of people living in assisted housing in the community of Ilfracombe. Our fund helped The Straw Patch to provide people without their own transportation, by funding a minibus to bring people to their site. Some funding also went towards art and craft materials, cooking ingredients and gardening resources for 6 weekly sessions. This has enabled the group to connect, grow and learn together. They have since been able to find further funding from other sources in the community to continue for another 40 weeks.

When we checked in with Sarah to see how things were going, we were delighted to hear her tell us “There have been so many positive outcomes. They have learned new skills, formed friendship groups outside of the main session… Their mental health has started to improve. A HUGE success! Thank you.” We are so pleased to hear how Recovery Devon were able to help in a small way, which has gone on to really have a big impact in the Recovery of others – all because of the amazing work of The Straw Patch Project!

The Straw Patch are running an open day tomorrow (7TH MAY 2022) between 1-4 PM, please see the poster below for details. You can find out more about what the project is up to here and to contact them directly, please email thestrawpatchproject@gmail.com.
