Barbers Training (funded project)

This proposition is put to you jointly by The Lions Barber Collective which is a Torbay based initiative, a group of 30 strong international barbers with the aim to smash the taboo surrounding Suicide and Mental health especially in men, and an Exeter based training company called Astra Training and Consultancy (a provider of Mental Health First Aid training).

How would this funding help?
This funding would help raise awareness of recovery and mental health issues among barbers who already have a huge level of trust with their clients and are in a perfect position to talk to them, also about mental health problems and provide ‘a listening ear’. Barbers need knowledge in mental health and practical skills in how to recognise any issues, e.g. suicidal thoughts, how to listen, ask the right questions and signpost to appropriate help. Training in mental health first aid will mean that barbers will be able to;

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health problem
  • Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
  • Help stop a mental illness from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Guide someone towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health problems

With your support, by providing this training course to barbers we will maximise the potential of discussing mental health among men in an effective and appropriate way.
